Amusing There's somebody smelly standing near me on the bus (though now all I smell is pot, which is fine). I had my finger under my nose to block the smell, and as I wondered why that seemed to work, I thought of an incident from my childhood. My mom was about to sneeze, so I stuck my finger under her nose to stop it, like they do in old WB cartoons.
It did stop her from sneezing, but only because she was laughing so hard. |

After lagging somewhat, it seems that bank commercial loan portfolios have taken a turn for the worse. I am working on two decent sized companies that are probably going to be filing bankruptcy in the next couple of weeks. One is money good and the other we'll probably lose a lot of money on. The stock market isn't sure what's going on with such huge volatilitly. Bank stocks are way down one day and way up the next. Real estate is dropping but prices are just getting back to where they were a couple of years ago. When you artificially bid up prices with borrowed money, prices return to more normal levels when it becomes harder to borrow money. |

The Picket Line — 19 July 2008 http://www.sniggle.net/Experiment/index.php?entry=19Jul08 An update on Charles Merrill’s tax resistance to support government recognition of same-sex marriages (in which he’s buried $2 million of gold in the desert). Also: Ron Paul supporters aren’t giving up yet. And: yes, there are war tax resisters in Canada. |

Prop 8 Ponderings So, here we are, 110 days left to defeat this proposition, and I'm wondering what is going on. Where are the big gay media organizations with their t-shirts, their bumper stickers, their lawn signs, their TV ads, their billboards, their motivational posters? Where is the public face of the organizations dedicated to stopping passage of the amendment? Am I being totally oblivious and missing all of the publicity efforts?
I know I can do my part by talking to people and trying to raise awareness amongst my friends and family, but that's not going to be enough. We need to get the message out there, and I'm just not seeing the big organizations doing anything besides collecting money and hosting online wedding registries. I'm happy to contribute money, but I'm hesitant to do so if this is the best we're going to get.
Or are they all waiting for some magical number of days before the election before actually starting their work to sway public opinion? |

GOO Fest 2008 This Weekend When was the last time that you got to play in a 20 foot waterslide AND wrestle in 100lbs of pudding and corn starch??? Thats what I thought! Euphoria Productions (Trish/Zac/Jax/Greg) Presents: GOO Fest 2008! When: July 19th, 2008, Noon - Until we can't party anymore Where: The Monkey Ranch (4285 Calf Canyon Highway, Creston). Url at bottom of the page, if you haven't been out there already. Who: You, and anyone you know who wants to enjoy fun and frolicking on a hot summer day. What: Pudding Wrestling! Giant Water Slide! The Lube-a-torium! (don't ask) And a special surprise involving over a 100 bottles of shampoo! *NOTE* -- We will have snacks available, but if you plan on running around in the sun having fun and drinking all day, you'll probably want to bring some of your own foodstuffs to help soak up all the delicious alcohol! :-) *Double Note* -- Its also Tony's birthday! Be sure to give him a big hug after you've gone through the Lube-a-torium! If you can read this, you'll want to show up. They outlawed this much fun and excitement years ago, but by special permit we've been allowed to open up the Fun Hose non-stop for the weekend (no, not THAT Fun Hose!). If you decide to come (and I don't know why you wouldn't), bringing a bottle of your favorite booze will help ensure that the libations from the Monkey Ranch bar will be flowing all night long. Questions? Comments? Need more information? Drop me an email or give me a call at: 805.801.5918 and I'll eventually get you what you need. :-) It is a bit of a drive, about 20-30 minutes depending on how you drive, but definitely worth the trip. And, since Tony & Roxy are so awesome, you can bring a tent and camp out overnight if you'd rather not drive back into town after a day and night full of partying! Directional Stuff: Google Map URL: http://tinyurl.com/4v25p9Once you're on Calf Canyon (Hwy 58), just look for the big RV / Offroad campsite sign -- its literally RIGHT after that -- the first time I blew right by it and had to turn around and come back. :-) |

Prop 8 Update Well, if I'm interpreting the email from the CA Supreme Court correctly, it looks like they've decided not to hear the case which would remove Prop 8 from the November ballot. Got the email just a few minutes ago, haven't seen any discussion about it yet. Update: Confirmation from the AP. |

New Floors (and Painted Walls) So, progress on the new home continues. Last week, we had a majority of the inside walls and ceilings painted. We made some bold color choices for certain walls, but for the most part went with neutrals. The painters did an outstanding job, and even accommodated changes we requested mid-job (we forgot to tell them our paint finish preferences). If anyone in the San Jose/Campbell area is looking to get their house painted, we can provide a recommendation. This week, we're getting new floors installed throughout the condo. It's been a bit more problematic than the painting in that the flooring company we're using did not seem to do a good job with the details. We've had to ask for things that I would normally assume would be a standard question (things like underlayment for the hardwoods, floorboards, trim, etc.). We're also having problems with the house being thirty years old and the floor has sagged ever so slightly in some areas. With the parallel lines of the hardwood, it's somewhat noticeable. Overall, we're pretty happy, though. Pics of the progress are here: http://gallery.me.com/jkusters#100016We're scheduled to move-in on Monday the 21st. Don't know how soon after that we'll actually be living there, but probably within a day or two (once we get the internet up and running). Whee! |

Realizations It's kind of sad when I realize that my parents are blinded by their upper middle class status, and don't include nearly half of the US population when they say things about "everybody." Like, "Everyone loses money when the stock market is in decline." And they seem incapable of understanding that there is a large percentage of the population that is only hurt when the Fed and Congress move to shore up the Stock Market for the benefit of the investor class, a lot of people who see no benefit to it.
It's also kind of sad when I realize that they tacitly support efforts to undermine gay rights gains in the last few years. They continue to contribute money to the Catholic church and yet stand silent when I'm called intrinsically disordered, or when Church officials condemn marriage equality and fund efforts to ban it. They're not willing to take a stand, rock the boat, or deviate from the highly ordered world of the Church (unless it benefits them directly).
I'm sure that most of us are disappointed by at least a few things about our parents. These are among my disappointments. I also realize how futile it is to try and open their eyes, now that they're in their sixties and seventies.
Makes me wonder what the next generation will say about me, though. How will I inevitably disappoint them? |

Didn't anybody ever teach me anything? My two recent hobbies, motorcycling and gardening, are both challenging in their own very different ways. And I'm basically learning them both on my own, from books, the internet and verbal advice, but very little actual coaching. I did go to motorcycle school, but one weekend with a dozen other students is not the same thing as having someone help me develop and hone my skills over time.
With gardening in particular, I feel especially on my own. I really do want to eventually grow most of my own food--that's not just an idle daydream, it's something I actually hope to achieve. But most of the people I've read about who grow most or all of their own food have been doing it all of their lives, or at least grew up on farms. For me, it's all new. I don't even know what a hoe is for.
I did help my grandfather in his garden when I was nine or ten, and we had a garden in our yard when I was 13 or 14, but never consistently, and I don't feel like I brought any knowledge to my current efforts that stemmed from those experiences. I couldn't even keep a houseplant alive as of six or seven years ago; my peace lily, which I got around 2002, is the first plant I've ever managed to keep alive for more than 6 months. It is my inspiration. When I realized that I could keep a plant alive, I grew more and more interested in cultivating them.
I feel like I need to go live on someone else's established farm for a while--and by a while, I mean a couple of years--so I can learn how it all really works. Learn the cycles, the rhythms. How to plan a planting schedule. How to build a shed and sharpen shears.
I could take classes. There is a class at City College I'd like to take, but last I looked its schedule was incompatible with my job.
Someone suggested I look into getting a bachelor's in horticulture. I haven't looked into it yet, but I think that would probably be incredibly expensive. Might be worth it. It could require quitting my job, though, which is a scary prospect. |

Squee!!! While watering the garden last night (I know, I know, but I don't have time in the morning) I noticed that the biggest of the pumpkin flowers looked not just closed, but a bit whithered. So I took a closer look, and right at the base of that big ol' pumpkin flower was a tiny little pumpkin!
It's green and slightly stripy, about the size of a ping pong ball. Or at least it was last night--in my experience, plants and their fruits often grow at an alarming speed, so it could be visibly bigger by now. I bet it will be by the next chance I'll have to see it, which will be Wednesday night. |

WoW update Sangha: L67.8 Ceidl L38 Tusmashy L26
haven't played any other toons in a long time. Main goal is to wait for M to hit L67 (I don't want to be more than 1 level ahead of her at any given time, so we can keep working on the same quests together), and then Tusmashy to 35 (crafting!). Already did 2 levels on him this weekend.
I'm vaguely contemplating stopping ceidl at L39 and spending some time in the battlegrounds. It'll help me figure out more of how to get behind prople who are moving. I'm still not quite as fast as I want to be for that. |
